Evolution of modular buildings: Part 3 - Anything bricks-and-mortar can do...

Modular building floor plans have come a long, long way since the days of the basic prefabricated rectangle. The industry has many years of experience now, and new methods, materials and standards have removed the earlier constraints.

Architects and designers now create plans and configure modular space with the same freedom as for a bricks-and-mortar building. Today, a modular building might be a bullet-proof security kiosk, a two-story modular in-plant office, or an 11,500 sf sales center.

Experts today estimate that virtually every American has been inside a modern modular building - and few realize it. This is a testament to the enormous strides made by the modular building industry over the past 25 years. The untutored eye can no longer tell "stick-built" from modular construction.
Evolution of Modular Buildings

Part 1 - Early days

There's nothing remotely new about the idea of portable, prefab buildings. The concept is at least as ancient as the pyramids.

The pharaohs who built tombs to last for ever also had walls to last the night, knock-down prefab pavilions that accompanied the rulers when they were roughing it with the troops.

Fast-forward several thousand years, and we find the record of America's first modular building, a panelized wooden structure, shipped from England to Cape Ann in 1624 to house personnel

Retailers turn to storage containers as on-site solutions for holiday inventory

'Tis the season when stock rooms bulge at the seams, boxes pile in the aisles and atop the racks, and retailers turn to Pac-Van steel storage containers to store their extended inventory for the holiday season.

It's a highly practical and budget-friendly choice. A 14g all-steel storage container (a.k.a. shipping container or connex box) creates instant, lease-by-the-month cubic space-secure, weather and vandal proof, and right at hand.

Steel storage containers make sound business sense as a planned, short-duration cost. Lease-by-month lets our retailer clients terminate their lease when the crush ends and the container is empty, purpose served. One call, and we'll be there to pick up.

For store managers, the advantages of having extra on-the-spot storage space emerge in stockroom efficiencies and, importantly, in customer service and satisfaction at a madly busy time.

With their merchandise immediately available in a storage container-not stored miles away at a distribution center-their customers go home with purchases in their hands, instead of a shipping date.

The security of an all-steel storage container is another factor for our retailer clients. Unlike aluminum containers (that can be broken into with a large box knife), as our storage container page says, a Pac-Van steel container has "serious construction, serious security".

Heavy 14g steel throughout, with a wooden floor, and heavy cam rods on the doors. Supplemental, virtually indestructible rod locks can also be installed. We also fit containers with shelving. (Check our storage container FAQ for detailed information.)

If you're a retailer looking for an answer to holiday inventory overflow, Pac-Van has 20 locations that can easily deliver a storage container to your store's back door. The PV Office Locator at top left will take you to your closest branch.
